KARABO MOTAUNG: SENIOR ANALYST, COMPETITION COMMISSION OF SOUTH AFRICA

“Being in the Competition Regulation fraternity, pursuing a Masters degree in Competition and Economic Regulation has helped me gain specialized knowledge and has enhanced my expertise in the field. My understanding of the role that competition policy and economic regulation has on the broader economy has shifted significantly.

I am better able to make sense of certain policy decisions and to engage more broadly on matters of competition and economic regulation. The course has overall sparked new research interest for myself and I am excited about my future work in this space.”

GRACE NSOMBA: ECONOMIST AT THE CENTRE FOR COMPETITION, REGULATION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

“My experience on the Mcom in Competition and Economic Regulation was nothing short of rewarding having acquired knowledge and skills to carry out economic analysis in competition and regulatory matters. Through my time on the course, I learnt that while the macroeconomic environment is important in economic analysis, the micro level through firm behaviour and strategies are also equally important in assessing market outcomes. This has been exceedingly beneficial in my current role as a researcher, as these are important issues to consider when making policy recommendations.

The programme has also helped me in other ways both professionally and personally. I was provided with a unique platform to network with professionals (both students and lecturers) from various professional and cultural backgrounds which contributed to my understanding of competition and economic regulation and its application in different industries. The focus of modules being interactive was also particularly useful in not only practically applying theory to real life economic situations but also made a contribution to the lasting professional and personal relationships that I currently hold."

Maletuma Malie: Senior Account Manager , Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) (Information Services division)

“The decision to pursue a Master's degree in Competition and Economic Regulation was not a difficult one. It is after all a field that I have found intriguing since my undergrad days. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the programme offered by the University of Johannesburg is as interesting as it is challenging. The programme covers various aspects of competition and regulation, with a South African as well as a global perspective. I have learned to think and write critically and to apply complex economic principles to practical scenarios. I believe that this qualification will set us apart from other scholars, creating an opportunity to play an active role in the ever advancing field of competition. The recent developments in the South African competition regime will undoubtedly unlock growth opportunities for graduates of this programme in the various industries that we work for.”

Julius Nyamwena: ECONOMIST AT THE CENTRE FOR COMPETITION, REGULATION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

“As a young researcher/economist enrolling for the Mcom in Competition and Regulation Economics at the University of Johannesburg has helped me to improve my understanding of the fundamentals of my work. As such my interest in competition and industrial policies issues has been enhanced and the knowledge I have acquired is essential and positions me to cement my career in this space going forward.

I chose this masters for three main reasons. Firstly, it’s an emerging area in economics which is important in understanding why competition and regulation is vital for development and can be used in addressing imbalances in the economy and foster sustainable inclusive growth. Secondly, The impeccable quality of the lecturers is second to none, the course is taught by experienced international economist with both corporate and academic experience in competition and regulation issues. Some of these are names I used to read in newspapers or watch them on television. The opportunity to learn and interact with them is priceless. Last but not least, the course is very flexible and let not distance worry you.  The classes are held after working hours and are online.

To put it simply, I have loved it so far and have been pushed a lot academically.”

Motshegetsi Sebalo: Petroleum Industry Analyst, National Energy Regulator of South Africa

“My interest for issues related to competition and regulation grew after I attended the ACER week (training and conference)  in 2017 in Tanzania. Fortunately in 2018, a masters program was launched.  The program has broaden my perspective and understanding of how regulation can be used to facilitate competition in markets.

Fast paced, demanding but worthwhile. The knowledge gained is invaluable. All regulators and competition analysts should definitely consider the program.”

Yondela Mahlathi: Analyst, Competition Commission of South Africa

“When I joined the Competition Commission of South Africa back in 2017, I did not have vast knowledge and experience in competition and regulatory policy. In 2018, I enrolled for the MCom in Competition and Economic Regulation course. The purpose of the qualification was to equip students with specialist knowledge and skills required to undertake rigorous economic analysis in competition and regulatory matters. With no fear or favour I can confirm that this was the best decision I have ever taken. The course has improved my understanding of the role of competition and regulation in economic development. I can now effectively analyse anticompetitive conduct, particularly in abuse of dominance competition cases across a wide range of industries. The course content has also improved my understanding of previous competition cases and this has had a ripple effect on the quality of my work and my contribution to the attainment of the overall mandate of the Competition Commission. I personally believe that the qualification/course has significantly improved my level of thinking.”

Boitumelo Monare: Private Banking, Investec

"Pursuing this course has been one of the most intellectually rewarding experiences of my life. I was clear after I graduated from my honours degree in 2011 that I wouldn't be pursuing a Masters degree just for the sake of having one, it needed to be intentional due to the time and effort investment required. When I discovered that UJ was offering this specialized course in a field of economics I've always been particularly interested in, I was over the moon! The course has met my expectations and the lecturers enlisted to impart knowledge are world class and as experts in the field, have brought in interesting and  engaging perspectives on competition and regulatory matters. Definitely recommended by me for anyone who like me, is looking at starting and building a career in the competition space."
