Innovation and Inclusive Industrialisation in Agro-processing (IIAP)
2019–2021
Innovation and Inclusive Industrialisation in Agro-processing (IIAP) was a collaborative research project between the University of Edinburgh, CCRED at the University of Johannesburg, and the Economic and Social Research Foundation in Tanzania, funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Global Challenges Research Fund. Conducted between 2019 and 2021, the project examined the factors shaping innovation, industrial upgrading, and inclusive participation in agro-processing value chains in South Africa and Tanzania.
Focusing on the maize meal, citrus, and dairy value chains, the comparative study analysed the challenges affecting SME participation, capability development, and value chain integration across the two countries. The research generated both country-specific and cross-country lessons on strengthening domestic value chains, deepening regional integration, and supporting more competitive participation in global value chains. The findings contributed to industrial policy debates at both national and regional levels. As part of the project, CCRED and its partners hosted stakeholder workshops in South Africa and Tanzania and published research outputs in journals including the European Journal of Development Research and Innovation and Development.
