Researchers say competition laws must be amended to fund risky businesses and support rivalry

The Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development on Tuesday released its latest research on barriers to new entrepreneurs and producers to access the wider market. The research suggests South Africa needs a new approach to open up the economy and allow for better competition.

Professor Simon Roberts who led the Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development (CCRED) in a research conducted on opening the country’s economy said the was a great need to regulate competition and rivalry and amend competition act.

IT MAY be a case of clutching at straws, but any piece of economic good news is to be welcomed. The May news on manufacturing is good, with production increasing a better-than-expected 4% on a year-on-year basis.

New research from the University of Johannesburg’s Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development (CCRED) shows how much money consumers have saved thanks to competition being introduced into South Africa’s biggest sectors.

Manufacturing production improved for the second consecutive month in May - an indication that the sector grew in the second quarter and helped the country to avoid a technical recession.
